Advanced Gum Care

Healthy Gums  =  A Healthy Body

The most important step you can take to maintain healthy gums and teeth is to commit to an effective home-care routine (brushing & flossing regularly and thoroughly) and to have regular professional continuing-care with your dental hygienist.

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, and flossing at least once a day (preferably before bed) go a long way towards a healthier mouth and a healthier you!

If you already have gum disease -- or periodontal disease as it is referred to in dentistry -- professional care and your regimen of brushing and flossing are even more important.

There is no denying the link between oral health and systemic health.  Science today has linked oral health with heart disease, diabetes, and even pre-term/low birth-weight babies, just to name a few of the health issues that gum disease affects or is affected by.  Given these facts, it becomes imperative for each of us to concentrate more of our efforts to achieving, and maintaining, good oral health.

What else can you do for your oral & overall Health?

  • Quit smoking!  There are too many risks involved.
  • Eat a healthy diet as recommended by Canada’s Food Guide.
  • Be aware of any side effects of the medications you take.
  • Become aware of the relationships between diabetes, heart disease and periodontal disease (gum disease).
  • Mothers-to-be must become aware of the relationship between periodontal disease and pre-term, low birth-weight babies.
  • Check your own gums and teeth on a regular basis to look for signs of gum disease.  Remember, gums that bleed are never “normal’!

What to look for:

  • Red colouration of the gums (they should be mostly pink, sometimes pigmented)
  • Swollen gums (they should be tight to the teeth, never puffy)
  • Painful or tingly gums
  • Blood on your toothbrush or floss (bleeding is NOT a sign of health)
  • Persistent bad breath or a chronically bad taste in your mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth that have changed position during a short time frame
  • Teeth that appear longer than they once did (a sign of gum recession and/or bone loss)
