Composite Resin Fillings

What is a composite resin?

Composite resin is a natural looking, tooth-coloured synthetic material that is one of the most conservative, versatile and affordable ways to functionally and esthetically restore teeth. Composite resins bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage.  It also insulates the tooth from excessive temperature changes. Composite resins come in a wide variety of shades that can be blended to create a colour nearly identical to that of the actual tooth.

What are the indications for the use of composite resin fillings?
  • Restore cavities in front and back teeth
  • Replace old or unattractive silver (mercury) fillings (a.k.a. amalgams)
  • Repair root abrasion
  • Close spaces between front teeth
  • Restore chipped or fractured teeth
  • Improve or change the colour of permanently stained or discoloured teeth
  • Reshape crooked or misshapen teeth
How are composite resin fillings placed?

The dentist will begin by administering a local anaesthetic. Once you are numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing the decayed portions of the tooth. After the preparation is complete, the tooth will be isolated and bonding agents will be applied to the inside surface of the cavity. The bonding agents act as the "glue" between the tooth and the composite resin.

Once the bonding agent has been cured, the incremental build-up of the composite resin material begins. The composite resin is added in layers to allow for successive and thorough curing. When this process is finished, the filling is shaped to fit your bite and polished to prevent staining and early wear.

How should I take care of my composite resin filling?

Composite resin fillings are designed to look, feel and function like your natural teeth. Therefore, it is important to brush, floss and see your dentist/dental hygienist regularly. To prevent damaging or fracturing your composite resin, avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects. You also want to avoid clenching or grinding your teeth. If you habitually clench or grind your teeth, you may need a nightguard.

Good oral hygiene will help prevent staining from tobacco, coffee, tea and other staining foods and beverages. With proper care you can expect your composite resin filling to last many years, though they are not as strong as porcelain and will gradually wear. (See CEREC for more information on porcelain fillings.)

"You wouldn't take a leaky thermometer, put it in your mouth, and leave it there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Yet that's exactly what happens when an amalgam filling is installed in your mouth."
