Orthodontics

What is it?

Orthodontics is a way of repositioning teeth so that they become even, level and straight. It treats teeth and jaw irregularities through the use of traditional metal braces or teeth aligners. Typical problems corrected include alignment issues and correct contact between the upper and lower teeth.

Benefits to you!

Orthodontics will reposition teeth in order to achieve a straighter, more aligned smile, but also more importantly, a better bite. The back teeth function like gears and work most effectively when they mesh together properly. Orthodontics can reposition poorly meshing teeth to prevent premature wear and improve functionality.

What you need to know!

Treating children
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that you first take your child to the orthodontist at age seven. This allows for early identification and treatment of dental and skeletal imbalances of the teeth and the developing jaw structures. Early intervention allows for corrections to be made that are not always easily achieved when the jaw stops growing (as is the case with an adult).

Two types of Orthodontics
At Vitality Dentistry, we offer two types of Orthodontics – conventional braces and Invisalign. Each has it’s strengths depending on what needs to be achieved.

Conventional Braces
These are the traditional braces that are most common identified with Orthodontics. The brackets themselves can be metal, ceramic or clear and have a wire that runs through the length of the upper and lower structures. Braces generally give better and faster results than alternatives such as Invisalign. They can handle everything including cross bites, severely extruded or intruded teeth, and severe crowding. Full treatment generally takes two to three years to complete.

Invisalign
Invisalign is a clear tray that people wear to reposition teeth. It is very aesthetic... and as the name suggests, is almost invisible. This is great for fixing minor issues such as rotated teeth, minor crowding and gaps between teeth. Not all people are candidates for this treatment especially those with more severe problems. Treatment can take anywhere from six months to a couple of years to complete.

Why Vitality?
One of the advantages of Dentistry at Vitality Health is that we provide the convenience of multiple disciplines within the same facility. And the same applies to Orthodontics. Our in-house Orthodontist is Dr. Greg Hergott. He has more than 23 years of Orthodontic experience. In addition, he teaches Orthodontics at the University of Toronto and also holds a PH.D. in cell biology from the same institution.
