Wisdom Teeth Aftercare

To ensure your gums heal properly and comfortably it is important to follow the aftercare instructions provided to you by your dentist. You can resume normal activities after 4-5 days. Here are some of the instructions to expect:

  • While anesthetized be careful not to bite your lips, tongue or cheek
  • Bite on a dampened gauze pad for 20 minutes after the extraction (If bleeding after 20 minutes repeat for an additional 20 minutes)
  • Immediately after apply an ice pack to the area for two hours (in 20 minute intervals – on and off)
  • Do not smoke for a minimum of three days after the surgery
  • Do not clean the teeth next to the extraction site
  • Do not suck through a straw or rinse your mouth vigorously
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages
  • Do not eat hot or spicy foods
  • Drink plenty of fluids and eat only soft nutritious foods on the day of the extraction (Resume your regular diet when you feel comfortable)
  • Rinse your mouth gently after meals with warm salted water
  • Sleep with two pillows to elevate your head
  • Take part only in calm activities on the day of the extraction
