Neuromuscular Dentistry

What is it?

Neuromuscular dentistry is the science of determining the optimal position of your jaw based on the muscles and nerves. An optimal neuromuscular bite can alleviate headaches, neck and back aches, temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ/TMD). Dr Raj Singh & the Dentistry at Vitality Health team is one of only a few practices trained in and committed to the philosophy of neuromuscular dentistry.

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are a group of chronic degenerative diseases that often take years to develop and affect millions of people. TMDs are often caused by the jaw being misaligned which affects both the hard and soft tissue.

  • Headaches
  • Jaw, neck and shoulder pain
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Chipped & broken teeth
  • A collapsed bite and change in optimal facial proportions
  • Clicking, grinding, and popping sounds in the jaw joint

Placing the jaw into its optimal position relieves the symptoms associated with TMDs. While traditional dentistry primarily evaluates the teeth, bones, and gums, neuromuscular dentistry works with the soft tissues, muscles and nerves. Neuromuscular dentists ensure the muscles that fuel the movement in the jaw and the nerves that regulate the movement work collectively for a perfect pain free bite.
