Cosmetic Treatments

A brighter smile in
one appointment or at home.

Professional teeth whitening removes deep stains that store-bought products can't touch. At Vitality Health, we offer both in-office power bleaching for immediate results and custom take-home trays for gradual brightening. Your dentist supervises the process to ensure safety and optimal whitening without sensitivity.

Professional vs. Over-The-Counter

Why professional whitening works better

Over-the-counter whitening strips, gels, and mouthwashes contain bleaching agents—but at much lower concentrations than professional treatments. A typical store-bought strip contains 3–10% peroxide, while professional whitening uses 15–35% hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. This higher concentration penetrates deeper into the enamel to remove years of staining.

Professional whitening is also supervised. Your dentist assesses which teeth can be safely whitened, identifies stains that whitening won't address (like stains from decay or medications), and monitors for sensitivity. Over-the-counter products have no professional oversight—you're guessing at results and potentially causing damage like gum irritation or enamel wear.

Cost matters too. Most people try store-bought whitening first, see minimal results after weeks of use, then decide to invest in professional treatment. At that point, they've spent money on ineffective products and are starting from scratch. Professional whitening usually delivers results after one appointment—sometimes even a single treatment shows dramatic lightening.

Results last longer with professional treatment. Custom take-home trays keep working for weeks, and annual touch-ups maintain brightness. Over-the-counter strips fade quickly, forcing repeated purchases. The per-whitening-treatment cost of professional care is actually lower when you consider durability and effectiveness.

What to Expect

Your professional whitening experience

In-Office Power Whitening (60 minutes). You arrive, and Dr. Wang applies a protective barrier to your gums so the whitening gel stays on your teeth. The professional-grade bleaching gel (typically 35% hydrogen peroxide) is then applied evenly to your visible teeth. An LED activation light helps the whitening process. After 15 minutes, the gel is rinsed away, your teeth are assessed for shade change, and a fresh application is applied. Most patients complete two or three cycles in one appointment.

Results are immediate. Your teeth will look noticeably brighter within the hour, though final shade stabilizes over 24 hours as the enamel rehydrates. Many patients see a 4–8 shade improvement on the professional whiteness scale. Sensitivity is possible (especially if you already have sensitive teeth), but we use desensitizing treatments before and after to minimize discomfort.

Take-Home Whitening Trays (ongoing). During your first visit, we take a digital scan of your teeth and fabricate custom trays that fit your mouth precisely. These are not the generic 'boil and bite' trays you see at the drugstore—they're custom-molded to your teeth for even coverage and minimal gum contact. We provide professional-grade bleaching gel (usually 10–16% carbamide peroxide) that you apply at home.

You wear the trays for 30 minutes to several hours daily (depending on gel strength). Most people start seeing results after 3–4 days and achieve significant whitening after 1–2 weeks of consistent use. Custom trays can be refilled year after year, making them a cost-effective option for long-term brightness maintenance.

Which option is right for you? In-office whitening is ideal if you want dramatic results quickly (before an event or special occasion). Take-home trays are better if you prefer gradual brightening, have sensitive teeth (we can use lower concentrations), or want ongoing brightness maintenance.

Whitening FAQs

Everything you need to know about professional teeth whitening.

Results vary based on your habits and lifestyle. In-office whitening typically lasts 6–12 months. Take-home trays can maintain brightness for several months, then may need a touch-up cycle. Factors that fade whitening include: drinking coffee, tea, red wine, or cola; smoking; acidic foods; and time itself. Some people maintain results with minimal fading for a year; others see decline in 3–4 months. Annual touch-ups keep your smile bright.

Professional whitening is safe when supervised by a dentist. The bleaching agents used are chemically similar to what your body produces naturally during metabolism. Extensive research shows that professional whitening doesn't weaken enamel or damage tooth structure. We do protect your gums with a barrier so whitening gel stays on your teeth only. Overuse of whitening products can cause sensitivity, but controlled professional treatment is safe.

Whitening works best on extrinsic stains (surface stains from foods and drinks). It's moderately effective on intrinsic stains (stains within the tooth, like from medications or aging). It does NOT work on stains from decay, dark gray discoloration from root canal treatment, or stains from certain medications like tetracycline. If your stains aren't responsive to whitening, veneers or bonding may be better options. Dr. Wang can assess your stains and recommend the best treatment.

Whitening agents can temporarily open microscopic pores in your enamel, making teeth more sensitive to cold and pressure. This is usually mild and reversible. We minimize sensitivity by applying a protective fluoride treatment before and after whitening, and by recommending a desensitizing toothpaste for a few days afterward. If you already have sensitive teeth, we use gentler whitening formulas or take-home trays with lower peroxide concentration.

Whitening gel only lightens natural tooth structure. Crowns, veneers, and fillings don't change color when you whiten. So if you have a crown on a front tooth, whitening your natural teeth around it may make the crown look yellower by comparison. We often recommend placing cosmetic restorations AFTER whitening is complete, so the shade is matched to your new, brightened tooth color.

In-office power whitening typically costs $300–500 depending on the system and number of cycles. Custom take-home trays run $200–400 for the trays plus gel. Both are significantly less expensive than whitening you'd buy repeatedly over years, and results are much better. Whitening is typically a cosmetic treatment, so dental insurance doesn't cover it, but the investment pays off in confidence and smile brightness.

Custom trays are durable and can last for years. As long as they still fit your teeth and aren't cracked or warped, you can keep using them. You simply repurchase whitening gel refills when needed. This makes custom trays very cost-effective over time—you invest in the trays once, then pay only for occasional gel refills and annual touch-ups.

Professional in-office whitening can be done once every 3–6 months safely. Take-home trays with lower-concentration gel can be used more frequently—some patients do a 1–2 week cycle every few months. We recommend spacing treatments to avoid excessive sensitivity. Annual touch-ups are usually enough to maintain results for most people.
